IGNITE THE PASSION SUPPORT ROWING
Our Non-Profit Mission and Operations
Dating to a Harvard-Yale boat race in 1852, rowing is the oldest intercollegiate athletic activity in the United States. Both challenging and rewarding, the sport has ignited the passions of athletes of all ages, abilities and ambitions.
At the San Diego Rowing Club, we fuel the passion for rowing through programs for youth and collegiate rowers, Masters men and women.
Our charitable mission is to serve and educate youth in water safety and rowing to enable healthy lifestyles. We fulfill our mission through a robust youth program that spans 10 months from September to June. The program attracts more than 100 young rowers year after year and includes training camps, supervised training practices, and competitions. Many of our rowers are introduced to San Diego Rowing Club and the sport of rowing through US Rowing’s annual Learn to Row Day.
To carry out our mission, we require safe and durable equipment, skilled coaches, and the financial support of our community.
The San Diego Rowing Club was designated as a 501(c)(3) California Corporation in 1995. The Club's Form 990 Tax Returns can be viewed at GuideStar. Our EIN is 95-1185630
From all of the members, young and old, of the San Diego Rowing Club -- Thank you!

Donations of Appreciated Securities
The San Diego Rowing Club can accept Appreciated Securities as a donation. Securities (Stocks) that have increased in value and been held for more than one year can be better than donating cash to SDRC.
When you donate appreciated securities you have held for more than one year, you can reduce or even eliminate federal capital gains taxes on the transfer. You may also be entitled to a federal income tax charitable deduction based on the fair market value of the securities at the time of transfer.
By donating securities that have appreciated and held for more than a year, you are actually giving more than if you sold the stock and made a cash donation. The maximum federal capital gains tax rate is 20 percent on long-term holdings and there's no capital gains tax to pay if you donate the securities. In addition, you are still eligible to deduct the full fair-market value of the asset you donated from your income taxes, up to the amount allowed by the IRS.
Option 1: Sell stock and donate the net proceeds | Option 2: Donate stock directly to SDRC | |
---|---|---|
Current fair market value of securities | $50,000 (1000 shares * $50 per share) | Donate 1000 shares to SDRC at $50 per share for a total donation of $50,000 |
Long-term capital gains tax to be paid | Assuming a $5 per share cost basis or $5,000, and a 15% long-term capital gains rate, the federal tax due would be $6,750 | $0 |
Amount donated to SDRC | $43,250 | $50,000 |
Potential personal income tax savings assuming 32% rate x amount given. | $13,840 | $16,000 |
